Barca’s crazy Copa del Rey showing is cruel on Cubarsi

If ever there was a game that showed the need to get an extremely high defensive line exactly right, this was it.

After only five minutes of this classic Copa clash, most culers would’ve been forgiven for thinking that Hansi Flick had got things completely wrong.

By half-time Barca were back in front thanks to a press the likes of which we’ve rarely seen from the Blaugranes; incredibly intense and savage at times, Barca barely allowing Diego Simenoe’s side to breathe.

There were plenty of standout performances on the night too, including from the likes of Inigo Martinez and Pedri, but surely collective caps have to be doffed in Pau Cubarsi’s direction.

That might seem strange when he and his defensive colleagues have conceded four goals, but there’s something about the youngster that just resonates with lovers of the game.

There’s an ease to his play that’s often pleasing on the eye, a lightness of touch to his game mixed with the steely determination of the very best centre-backs. It’s truly frightening to think he much better he will get.

It’s ridiculous that he’s almost a decade away from reaching his peak as a player.

Despite having only just turned 18 Cubarsi plays the game like a veteran, and for someone so young to have such an appreciation of the defensive art is truly inspirational.

A towering header to set this tie alight only served to highlight his supplementary presence in attack also.

As if to emphasise his excellence on the night, strong-arming the gigantic Alexander Sortloth was a sight to behold, even if the Atleti hit-man ultimately had the last word, much as he had in the league game.

The first few and last few minutes aside, along with Martinez, Cubarsi laid the foundations for a game which saw the hosts engineer 60 percent possession, and a ferocity against a tough opponent they arguably won’t have been expecting.

Ultimately, it didn’t get Barca over the line on the night, but the tie is still alive.

Not much tends to be written or spoken about Cubarsi, but it should be. He’s every inch the quiet superstar but who should be grabbing as many headlines as the likes of Lamine Yamal et al..

He needs to be wrapped in cotton wool, however, as this type of defensive talent doesn’t come along too often.

It’s just a shame that he and his colleagues didn’t get their rewards on the night in a game that many people will be struggling to make sense of.

Chiefs GM Brett Veach says K.C. has to 'think outside the box' in 2025 NFL draft

The 2025 NFL Scouting Combine kicks off the full evaluation process of the next class of rookies preparing to enter the league. The Kansas City Chiefs, due to their late postseason runs, enter another NFL draft with late-round picks.

Chiefs general manager shared his thoughts on the team's process while selecting late in the draft each season during his combine press conference on Tuesday.

"It becomes more difficult, and that's why the league is so great," said Veach. "The more you win, the harder it's supposed to be, and so when you have a bunch of guys who are the top of the market for their position, and you pick last or close to last every year, it becomes very challenging. We just have to think outside the box and put some creative plans together."

The Chiefs have hit it big with late-round licks in previous seasons, with players such as Isiah Pacheco and Trey Smith going in the late rounds. Kansas City is currently slotted at 31st overall in the first round of this April's Draft.

Kane admits last-minute decision to make Bayern bench

Harry Kane admitted that the decision for him to start on the bench for Bayern Munich's 4-0 victory over Eintracht Frankfurt was only made on Sunday morning.

Kane has been nursing a calf injury since Bayern's Champions League game against Celtic last Tuesday and had only trained briefly before the visit of Frankfurt.

Having expected to miss the game, Kane was a surprise inclusion on the bench for Vincent Kompany’s side.

"I didn't train for a few days after the Celtic game, and we just tried to give it as much rest as possible," Kane told reporters after the game.

"Yesterday I felt for about 30 minutes and it felt ok.

"We made a decision today (Sunday) to be on the bench and I think it was the right call. You know, we needed fresh legs, fresh energy on the pitch and that's exactly what happened.

"A last-minute decision is not always best for the coach, but it was the right call today.

"It was nice to get that 20 minutes at the end just to see how it felt — and it felt good. We have five more days until the game on Friday and it should be fine.

"The team are off tomorrow (Monday) so I will get some treatment and be in the best possible shape for Friday."

Bayern, who travel to Stuttgart next on Friday night, broke Frankfurt's resistance in first half stoppage time before steam-rolling their opponents in a dominant performance to stay eight points clear at the top of the Bundesliga.

Kane was introduced for Thomas Mueller in the 64th minute, and they were 64 frustrating minutes for the England captain.

"To be honest, I hate watching the game when I'm not involved. I don't enjoy it," Kane admitted.

- 'Dominant performance' -

"But the performance was really top from everyone. There were a lot of fresh players in there today who hadn't played for a game or so and I think you saw that energy from the start.

"Without the ball, I think was the biggest difference compared with recent recent games. We just suffocated them and gave them very few opportunities and created quite a few. A real dominant performance."

Bayern will face Bayer Leverkusen in the Champions League last 16 in an all-German contest that Kane is eagerly anticipating, with the first leg at the Allianz Arena on March 5.

The teams have already met three times this season - twice in the league and once in the German Cup, a game that Leverkusen won 1-0. The other two games have been drawn — and Kane is anticipating another close one.

"It will be tough. Whether we got Leverkusen or Madrid, it would have been two tough games. We remember the performance we had against them with 10 men. If we go into that game with the same dominant performance we had today, we can hurt them.

"They are probably looking at the fact that they beat us and are thinking that they can do that again. We have to try to bring the energy that we brought today and for the majority of the season. They will be exciting games.

LeBron James agrees with Steve Kerr on the best men’s Olympic player in history

LeBron James agreed with Steve Kerr on the selection of the best men’s Olympic player in history.

LeBron James has had the opportunity to compete in four Olympic Games, making him one of the most experienced players in international basketball. With three gold medals to his name, he understands what it takes to dominate on the Olympic stage. However, when it comes to the greatest men’s Olympic player of all time, James fully agrees with Golden State Warriors head coach Steve Kerr—it’s Kevin Durant.

Kerr made the bold statement in Netflix’s Court of Gold documentary, calling Durant the best men’s Olympic player in history. James didn’t hesitate to endorse the claim, reacting on Instagram with a simple but emphatic response: “Facts!”—making it clear that he believes Durant stands alone atop the Olympic basketball hierarchy.

And with good reason. At 36 years old, Durant captured his record-breaking fourth gold medal at the 2024 Paris Olympics, surpassing Carmelo Anthony for the most by any male player in Olympic history. In Paris, Durant averaged 13.8 points, 3.2 rebounds, 2.3 assists, and 1.0 steals per game. Despite entering the tournament nursing a calf injury, he once again delivered in key moments, cementing his legacy as the greatest Olympic basketball player of all time.

Kevin Durant’s historic Olympic journey

Kevin Durant has solidified himself as one of the greatest players in Olympic basketball history, playing a pivotal role for Team USA across multiple tournaments. His Olympic journey began at the 2012 London Games, where he led the team in scoring with 19.5 points per game, guiding the U.S. to gold with a thrilling victory over Spain in the final. Durant’s ability to dominate on the international stage was undeniable, as he set a new Team USA Olympic scoring record with 156 total points in the tournament.

He returned for the 2016 Rio Olympics, once again proving to be the backbone of Team USA. Durant led the squad to another gold medal, delivering a commanding 30-point performance in the final against Serbia. His elite shooting, versatility, and leadership made him the undisputed go-to player for the national team. By the end of the tournament, he had firmly established himself as one of the most dominant international players of his generation, further etching his name into Team USA’s storied history.

In the 2020 Tokyo Olympics (held in 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic), Durant continued his reign as Team USA’s leader, averaging 20.7 points per game and securing yet another gold medal. However, his most recent Olympic triumph came at the 2024 Paris Games, where he once again spearheaded Team USA’s run to gold, defeating France in the final. With his fourth gold medal, Durant stands alone as the most decorated men’s basketball player in Olympic history, further cementing his legacy as one of the greatest to ever wear the red, white, and blue.

Premier League rivals have already tried to sign Arsenal wonderkid Ethan Nwaneri

Ethan Nwaneri is quickly becoming a hero to Arsenal fans, but it could all have been very different as Manchester City tried to sign him in 2023.

The 17-year-old has been thoroughly impressive this season as he has been given more regular opportunities to shine during Arsenal’s injury struggles.

The versatile forward has made 15 Premier League appearances this season, four of which have come in the starting XI, and scored three goals.

He also netted three times in the Gunners’ Carabao Cup campaign and has scored his first Champions League goal as he becomes a fixture in Mikel Arteta’s match day squads.

Nwaneri first burst into the public’s consciousness back in September 2022 when Arteta made headlines by throwing him on as a substitute in a Premier League win over Brentford.

The youngster was just 15 years and 181 days old at the time and became the Premier League’s youngest ever player and Arsenal’s youngest in any competition in the club’s history.

That early appearance attracted the attention of Manchester City, with the Premier League champions becoming interested in the teenage star.

Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano reports in GIVEMESPORT report that ‘discussions took place in the background’ but Arsenal were able to convince Nwaneri to stay in north London.

He then went on to sign his first professional contract with the club in March 2024 when he had turned 17.

Playing regularly in the Premier League before his 18th birthday and earning rave reviews, it looks like he made the right choice to stay at the Emirates.

Legendary Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has compared Nwaneri to the man who had previously been the club’s youngest ever player, Cesc Fabregas.

On the similarities between the current and former Gunners stars, Wenger told beIN SPORTS: ‘Nwaneri is more a creator of the final ball through his dribbling and the quality of his passes.

‘Fabregas was very strong mentally but this boy looks like he is as well.

‘When I look at him and his maturity, it’s difficult for me to think that he’s 17 years old. The sign of a special talent is that they are ready early.’

Nwaneri stood out again for Arsenal as they beat Leicester on Saturday, with Arteta saying he was on a different level to his teammates in terms of causing problems for the opposition.

‘Every time he was on the ball he made things happen,’ said the Spaniard. ‘You could see that he had another level of threat to the rest of the team.’

Luis Diaz issues Mohamed Salah plea to Liverpool

Luis Diaz has urged table-topping Liverpool to renew the contract of talismanic forward Mohamed Salah.

The 32-year-old is enjoying one of his finest seasons at Anfield, scoring 23 goals in 25 Premier League games in addition to contributing 14 assists. Salah's blistering form has helped the Reds surge seven points clear at the top of the Premier League table – a lead they could add to when they take on Aston Villa on Wednesday night.

But one of the main talking points of the season outside of Salah's on-field contribution has been his long-term future on Merseyside. Out of contract at the end of the season, alongside Virgil van Dijk and Trent Alexander-Arnold, the Egyptian is yet to agree fresh terms with Liverpool and could walk away at the end of the season amid interest from the Saudi Pro League.

That's a scenario Diaz, who is also enjoying a fine individual season, does not want to come to fruition, with the Colombian urging his employers to persuade Salah to ink fresh terms.

"I've said it before. They are super important for us," Diaz told Telemundo. "It's up to the club, but hopefully they'll stay because what they bring to the team is impressive. What they have done, what they have won. They don't settle for little.

"Mo is a player who is always trying to improve, he is always assisting and scoring, and he's happy. He's trying to give his best to the team. Whether they leave on a high note or stay to make history, I'm glad to be sharing these moments with them."

Such has been the brilliance of Salah, and Diaz to an extent, Liverpool have the chance to complete a famous treble in Arne Slot's first season in charge. Top of the Premier League table and already into the Carabao Cup final, the Reds also finished top of the revamped Champions League first phase table – giving them safe passage straight through to the last 16.

Despite the off-field distractions, Diaz insists the players are fully focused on achieving their trophy-winning ambitions. "We try to focus on ourselves first because we know what's at stake," he said.

"The manager also looks at each game and training session. We think about the opponent we're going to face to counteract what they might do. It's important to stay calm, and keep adding points because there's still a long way to go."

Tournament host Tiger Woods arrives at Genesis Invitational Sunday with Kai Trump in tow

Tiger Woods has made it to Torrey.

Woods is the tournament host of the Genesis Invitational, this year played at Torrey Pines in San Diego. He had committed to play the day of the entry deadline, but that was three days after his mom Kultida passed away and he subsequently withdrew, saying in a statement, "I'm just not ready."

During Sunday's final round, Woods arrived at the South Course and was seen on PGA Tour Live on ESPN+ watching guys warm up on the range. That included Justin Thomas, who came over to give his buddy a big hug.

Woods is even wearing his Sunday Red underneath a black sweater. Many of the competitors are also wearing red, even if just a hint of it, in the form of red pins. Woods had the same pin on his collar.

Before heading to the range, Woods was seen in the parking lot just after arriving.

Tagging along with Woods was Kai Trump, Donald Trump's granddaughter. Woods recently played a round of golf with the president. They played in the morning before the Super Bowl. Kai recently committed to play college golf at Miami.

Michael Owen slams three Man Utd players who 'literally do nothing'

Michael Owen took aim at Manchester United’s centre-backs after the defeat to Tottenham and said they ‘literally do nothing’ to contribute to the team.

James Maddison’s first-half goal earned Spurs a much-needed victory on Sunday and inflicted yet another defeat on struggling United.

England international Maddison was the only player to react after Lucas Bergvall’s shot was only parried by Manchester United goalkeeper Andre Onana and slotted home from yards out.

Owen was disappointed that none of Harry Maguire, Matthijs de Ligt or Noussair Mazraoui was on hand to deal with the situation but said it summed up their lack of input during the game.

‘What frustrates me more than anything about the Manchester United team is that those centre-halves do nothing during the game,’ Owen said on Premier League Productions.

‘They hardly pick up any players at all, yet when you ask them to do one job – stop the guy who’s shooting – they’re sleeping at that as well.

‘We’ve seen so many clips in the first half when there’s nobody to pick up, there’s three of them literally doing nothing. They won’t push in, they won’t go and mark anybody, they just sit there.

‘It’s the easiest position on the pitch in theory because they’re asked to do nothing. The manager plays so many defenders and none of them are picking anyone up.

‘The midfield for Manchester United has to be the hardest place to play in the Premier League and the defence should be the easiest because they literally mark no one, ever.

‘They sit there doing nothing and everyone else is outnumbered all over the pitch.’

While Tottenham celebrated their first win in three games following successive cup defeats to Liverpool and Aston Villa and eased some of the pressure on Ange Postecoglou, United have now lost three of their past four games.

That dismal run of form has seen Manchester United drop to 15th, 12 points above the drop zone and below previous relegation-battlers Everton.

Under-fire boss Ruben Amorim said: ‘It was hard. When we created situations and we don’t score, it is really hard.

‘Losing games and losing players, they have to change their approach to every game. We need to focus on the next game and forget the past.

‘They will see me with energy to move forward to prepare for the next game.’

Tottenham manager Postecoglou, meanwhile, said: ‘Important to win today and important game for us get our league form into some sort of opportunity to improve. I thought we played decent at times.

‘We had to do all facets of the game today. Pleased for all the new players coming in, they all contributed, but most important thing was to get the win today.’

Manchester United face the aforementioned Everton next weekend while Spurs return to action against Ipswich Town.

The best foods to eat before drinking alcohol

You can't deny that booze can do a number on your body, especially when you have a few too many. But by taking a few precautions before the alcohol starts to flow, you can help minimize the damage. In fact, picking the right foods before you indulge in an alcoholic beverage or two can help control hunger, balance electrolytes, and decrease some of the adverse effects associated with alcohol.

Salmon

One of the best sources of omega-3 fatty acids, salmon is associated with a multitude of health benefits. Some researchers suggest that omega-3 fatty acids could help reduce some of the harmful effects of alcohol, including inflammation in the brain. Also, salmon is high in protein, which may help slow the absorption of alcohol.

Eggs

Highly nutritious and filling, eating protein-rich foods like eggs before drinking booze can help slow the emptying of your stomach and delay alcohol absorption.

Also, protein is the most filling macronutrient, keeping you fuller for longer. This can reduce your risk of alcohol-induced food binges later in the night.

Bananas

Packed with fiber, bananas are an excellent pre-drinking choice, as they help slow alcohol absorption into your bloodstream.

Plus, they’re high in potassium, which may prevent electrolyte imbalances associated with drinking alcohol.

Gavi explains why Flick took him off at half-time at Sevilla

Gavi spoke about Hansi Flick’s decision to take him off at half-time of Sunday’s win over Sevilla in La Liga.

The midfielder started the game but was booked and looked to be struggling physically in the first half.

Gavi spoke to the media afterwards and explained why Flick had replaced him with Fermin Lopez.

“We are very happy with the game. It is not easy with one less player and we have done very well. The result here is very good,” he told the media.

“I was in a lot of pain and the manager told me that I had a yellow card and that the match was not the time to do anything stupid. Everyone knows that referees don’t cut corners with me. Fermín really had a great game. He came on and decided the match. I’m very happy for him.

“I’ve already said that the league is very long. People already thought that we weren’t going to be there. We’re two points behind and this is a long way off. We have to keep going and win everything that’s left to win this championship, which is what we want.”

Fermin came on and almost immediately put Barcelona 2-1 up but was then sent off for a reckless challenge and is now facing a ban.

Diogo Jota sums up Liverpool frustration as $20m duo miss huge chance - 5 talking points vs Plymouth

Liverpool has crashed out of the FA Cup after a shock defeat against Plymouth Argyle, the team sitting at the bottom of the Championship table.

After Harvey Elliott's handball inside the penalty area, Ryan Hardie found the back of the net with a spot kick placed into the corner. And that proved to be the only goal of the game in the end, with Liverpool unable to find a way back having lost its way early on.

Diogo Jota forced a decent save near the very end but there was nowhere near enough pressure applied to the Plymouth goal. Here are the five things Liverpool.com spotted as the game unfolded.

Magic of the FA Cup?

Plymouth head coach Miron Muslic described Liverpool as "the best team in the world" heading into the game and midfielder Callum Wright — a boyhood Reds fan — couldn't wait for kick-off. "It is a dream come true to get them at Home Park," he said.

"It’s going to be a good day. [Steven Gerrard is] the reason I play football today. It is going to be tough, the best team in the world, but we have a gameplan and hopefully we can cause an upset."

Fellow Liverpool fan Adam Randall was captaining Plymouth and there were magical storylines aplenty. Liverpool knew that would need to be snuffed out but it never really got going.

"What they need to show is fight," Slot said before the game began, knowing how tough it would be. "All these games are tight so we know it is going to be tough. Even with our starters it would be a tough fixture. We have to play it like it's the final otherwise it will be tough to get a result over here."

Liverpool played at the tempo of a training session for much of the match and hardly created a chance. Perhaps, in hindsight, it was an error not to take one or two more senior players to use off the bench.

Joe Gomez injury concern

Liverpool can hardly complain too much about injuries this season but losing Joe Gomez will be a blow. The center-back went down after just eight minutes and the Reds never recovered from that disruption.

Trent Alexander-Arnold is already injured and could miss the Merseyside derby on Wednesday. Gomez, if he is now out for another spell, is another player who would have been useful with two matches a week coming up for the foreseeable future.

Gomez limped off and Liverpool limped through the game here. In a kind of foreshadowing for what was to unfold in the rest of the 90 minutes, losing a senior player was not good news — and proved to be far from helpful.

Harvey Elliott and Federico Chiesa's missed chance

This was a big game for Harvey Elliott and Federico Chiesa. Both were on the more senior side in the starting team — made even more obvious when Gomez had gone off.

"I feel like I'm getting a bit old," Elliott told ITV Sport before the match. "Now there are 16-year-olds on our bench and hopefully they can come on and make a difference."

Neither he nor Chiesa really grabbed the chance by the scruff of the neck, though. The pair, signed for a combined sum of around $20m (£16m/€19m), struggled to get involved much and didn't particularly look up for the fight. They will both have left the field disappointed by their contributions, where there was a distinct lack of quality.

Young trio will learn from experience

Young midfield duo James McConnell and Trey Nyoni were handed another go from the start and Isaac Mabaya came off the bench early on. Each would have learned plenty from the experience.

Unlike the PSV match, this was not the kind of game that McConnell could thrive in. Nyoni looked much better against Southampton — another team that will try and play — than he did here. Mabaya, making his senior debut, did well enough but was booked which almost certainly contributed to him being taken off.

Ultimately, if any of the trio are players for the long-term at Anfield, they won't face a game, a pitch or a team like this very often. They came through the battle and the fault lies with those who are far more experienced.

Diogo Jota sums up Liverpool frustration

In large parts, it has been a frustrating season for Diogo Jota thanks to injuries. Nothing has been quite as infuriating for him as the first 45 minutes of this game, though. Outnumbered by the three-man Plymouth defense, he was unable to get a kick.

Things did not look up that much in the second half either. He improved slightly near the end — with his first shot coming in the third minute of added time — but was isolated and needed some help. Plymouth defended well but he needed a bit more from Elliott and co behind him.

Jota only needs one chance to score a goal but he never got a proper one. Liverpool must switch focus to the other competitions now — do that and this embarrassment will swiftly be forgotten. That starts with Everton on Wednesday night.

Lemhannas unveils 68th leadership program to develop visionary leaders

The National Resilience Institute (Lemhannas) launched the 68th National Leadership Preparatory and Strengthening Education (P4N) program here on Wednesday.

Lemhannas Governor Ace Hasan Syadzily stated that the P4N program is crucial in developing visionary leaders who adapt to changing times.

"Through the P4N program, participants will enhance their analytical skills, (hone their) leadership abilities, and gain a deeper understanding of various national issues, as well as changes in the global geopolitical landscape," Syadzily explained.

He noted that the P4N program aims to prepare and strengthen national leaders who exhibit moral integrity, ethical conduct, and a statesmanlike approach along with a national perspective, strategic thinking, and a solid grasp of geopolitics and geo-strategy.

Syadzily remarked that the program will span six months and utilize a case study-based approach, incorporating simulations, strategic analysis, discussions, and field visits to various strategic locations in Indonesia and internationally.

Participants in the P4N program will engage in various activities, from lectures and discussions to field studies, featuring expert speakers from domestic and international backgrounds.

As Lemhannas enters the geo-cybernetic era, it has made improvements in its teaching methods and evaluation systems, which include academic assessments and individual research papers.

Syadzily expects the improved system to measure and enhance cognitive, emotional, and psychometric skills while fostering integrity and character among participants as they prepare to take on national leadership roles.

The P4N program also aims to develop innovative solutions that align with the vision of achieving Golden Indonesia by 2045.

The 68th P4N program features representatives from the Indonesian Military (TNI), the National Police (Polri), civil servants, and several international participants from Timor-Leste, Jordan, Singapore, India, and Malaysia.

Another Indonesian dies following migrant shooting by Malaysia

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed the death of another Indonesian migrant worker following the shooting incident involving the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (APMM) in Selangor on January 24.

The man breathed his last on Tuesday while receiving treatment for his critical condition at a hospital in Malaysia, with his identity still being withheld.

“Two persons died (as a result of the incident),” the ministry’s Director of Protection of Indonesian Citizens, Judha Nugraha, remarked.

Earlier, the government had repatriated the body of Basri, an Indonesian killed on the same day of the shooting incident.

These two deceased migrants were among five Indonesians who were shot at by APMM officers while reportedly attempting to leave Malaysia illegally via the waters of Tanjung Rhu, Selangor.

Judha noted that two other Indonesians, with the initials HA and MZ, have since recovered, while another Indonesian, identified as MH, remains hospitalized for further treatment.

He added that HA and MZ are still under investigation by the Malaysian Police.

In light of the shooting, Judha affirmed that the Malaysian Police had arrested an Indonesian who entered Malaysia on a tourist visa, suspected of having links to the tragic event.

Judha stated that the government is still awaiting consular access to gather information regarding the arrested Indonesian.

The Malaysian authorities claimed that the shooting occurred when the five Indonesian migrant workers allegedly resisted arrest while reportedly attempting to leave Malaysia illegally.

However, the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs denied this version of events.

Judha emphasized that the survivors reported no resistance from the migrants, asserting that they did not attempt to resist arrest by wielding sharp weapons.

Consequently, Indonesia has called for a thorough investigation into the shooting, including assessing whether there was excessive use of force by the Malaysian authorities.

The Indonesian Embassy in Kuala Lumpur is gathering more information to get a clearer picture of the incident.

Judha also instructed the embassy's retainer lawyer to review and prepare future legal steps to follow up on the issue.

Why Man Utd rejected Mathys Tel deal – and how they could sign £60m alternative

Manchester United will be forced to fight on three fronts with a strike force that has scored three fewer league goals than Chris Wood between them this season after failing to bring in a forward during the January transfer window.

With a shift away from their previous wasteful approach to the transfer market and the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability rules to consider, the club have insisted all along that outgoings would be needed to fund any major squad revamp.

Here’s how United’s transfer window played out and what could come next:

Why did Tel’s move collapse?

Capturing Patrick Dorgu from Lecce, at a reasonable price of £25m with add-ons, represented a major win, especially given new coach Ruben Amorim made a new left-back his top priority.

Ruben Amorim makes huge sacrifice to prove a point to Man Utd owners

But with Marcus Rashford and Antony both loaned out, and the large majority of their substantial wages offloaded in a major boost to United’s PSR position, fans starved of goals were hopeful of bringing in some additional firepower before Monday’s deadline.

As has been the case for the past decade of decay, however, supporters were left disappointed. With two forwards out and zero brought in, United are effectively writing off another season and taking a major gamble on their misfiring frontline.

Mathys Tel was waiting by the phone for United’s call on deadline day, The i Paper was told. The 19-year-old striker had already turned Tottenham down once and was waiting for United to make a loan offer – given they had shipped Rashford off to Aston Villa, saving them at least £1m a month in wages.

But Bayern Munich’s insistence on a £5m loan fee put United off, sources said. United did not want to pay that much while “improving a competitor’s young players”.

United’s new approach to transfers

There is an admirable shift away from a short-term viewpoint under way at Old Trafford. Buying players in January is always difficult, with clubs reluctant to sell mid-season. Any winter purchases would have taken funds away from the summer budget, and when operating within tight PSR constraints, each signing has to be carefully planned out.

The new United hierarchy do deserve some recognition for trying to leave behind the bad habit of signing marquee names past their best on inflated wages.

In Dorgu, teenage defender Ayden Heaven and South American full-back Diego Leon, the club feel they have signed talented, high-potential young players for the long term without paying high fees.

What will United do this summer?

Refusal to pay over the odds has only aided their PSR position. The club can then go for their top targets that will fit the long-term strategy.

Rashford leaves door open to Barcelona transfer after Aston Villa loan

More players are likely to be sold in the summer, too, when other clubs can afford to do more business. Villa have a £40m option to sign Rashford permanently, with the likes of Casemiro likely to be able to find new homes then too.

That gives United a clear path to go and sign Amorim’s top choice. A January move for Swedish goal machine Viktor Gyokeres was considered, but Sporting were reluctant to sell mid-season. It would have taken a bid of £83m – the former Brighton and Coventry striker’s release clause – to bring him in now.

By waiting until the summer, Sporting are understood to be willing to let Gyokeres go for closer to £60m.

Why this is a big gamble

All of this would be fine, if United were not 13th in the table, with only four clubs – the bottom three and Everton – having scored fewer goals this season.

A change of approach is necessary, but failure to qualify for any European competition next season will have severe financial ramifications. Could this shift in mentality not have waited until the summer? After all, desperate times – a point United have already stepped beyond – calls for desperate measures.

Failure to bring in Tel or another striker on loan leaves United well short of goals. Amorim has so little faith in Rasmus Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee as central strikers that he deployed midfielder Kobbie Mainoo there in Sunday’s defeat to Crystal Palace instead.

The new boss is going to have to be even more creative over the next few months if he wants to avoid a record-breaking season of woe. Thanks to the increasingly-unpopular Sir Jim Ratcliffe and Ineos, he has no choice.

Americans drink more water than almost every other country. Here’s why

I remember while studying abroad in Spain, locals used to tell me that they could always spot Americans because we were lugging our big reusable water bottles everywhere. I can’t remember a time when I was there that I didn’t have my 40-ounce Hydro Flask with me.

I am far from the only American preoccupied with drinking water. According to Our World in Data, the United States was the top consumer of municipal water (for drinking, cooking, and washing) until 2003, when China surpassed us. Still, Americans are holding on to second place and sit steadily above most other countries.

Compared with the European Union, for example, U.S. adults are drinking an average of 57.5 ounces of water per day, while British adults are drinking an average of 33.8 ounces per day, according to polling from CivicScience reported by Newsweek.

So why do Americans seem to be guzzling water more than almost anyone else? Here are the factors driving the obsession.

1. Strong health messaging

Everyone’s daily water needs vary, which is why the FDA and CDC don’t provide specific hydration recommendations. Previously, the rule of thumb was to drink eight glasses of eight ounces of water per day—advice that likely came from the U.S. Food and Nutrition Board in 1945.

Nowadays, the U.S. Institute of Medicine and Dietary Reference Intakes, among other health institutions, recommends that men drink about 15.5 cups or 3.7 liters of fluid per day, while women should drink about 11.5 cups or 2.7 liters of fluid per day—which includes fluids from water, other beverages, and food.

That’s much higher than the European Food Safety Authority recommendations that men drink 10.5 cups or 2.5 liters of water per day and women drink 8.3 cups or 2 liters per day.

Registered dietitian Callie Krajcir, who specializes in bladder health, thinks the amplified messaging from the American government and health care providers encourages more water consumption compared to other countries.

“It’s just the success of the health care system drilling people with the message of, ‘Being hydrated is good for your health,’” Krajcir tells Fortune.

Water is essential to survival, as nearly all major bodily systems depend on water to function. According to the Mayo Clinic, benefits of hydration include:

Moistens tissues in the eyes, nose, and mouth.

Lubricates joints.

Helps prevent constipation.

Regulates body temperature.

Helps dissolve minerals and other nutrients to make them more accessible for the body.

Carries nutrients and oxygen to cells.

Lessens the burden on the kidneys and liver by flushing out waste products.

Protects body organs and tissues.

“Water is just the foundation of health in my opinion,” Krajcir says.

2. Social media hype

Krajcir also points to social media as a factor in Americans’ obsession with hydration. She sees videos that tout how good water is for everything from skin to mental health to its role in reducing bloating and constipation.

There are countless hydration challenges on #WaterTok, full of influencers who share their hydration hacks and water "recipes" that include adding electrolytes, flavors, and even chia seeds.

We’ve made [drinking water] into a trendy thing,” she says.

3. The trendiness of water

To understand how trendy drinking water has become, just look at the proliferation of water bottles. Owala and Hydro Flask have become status symbols and travel companions, as people personalize them with stickers and tote them everywhere they go.

You can even buy bottles that hold as much as a gallon of water, with encouraging phrases and hourly markers to encourage your daily hydration. And while apps that track exercise and calories have grown in popularity, so have those that track how much water you drink.

Krajcir thinks that water has become a symbol of well-being for many Americans—so much so that toting around a popular water bottle brand is a way to virtue signal how socially aware you are.

“Our culture has glamorized it. It’s a cool thing to carry around a Stanley cup,” says Krajcir. “It is just becoming trendier to be hydrated, which I am in full support of.”

The best SUVs in 2025 with three rows, according to experts

The best 3-passenger SUVs of 2025

In the search for top-shelf versatility in a vehicle, it's hard to beat the following seven-passenger SUVs. The Acura MDX, Kia Telluride, and Toyota Highlander are among the bestselling on the market, but they've got more than a few competitors that are also worth looking at.

Many of today's three-row SUVs sport comfortable passenger and cargo space, the latest safety equipment, and even good off-road capability that will fit anyone's intrepid summer vacation plans. But how do you know which is right for you? Look no further than what CarGurus put together in this guide to the best three-row SUVs on sale right now. Full-size SUVs from Cadillac, Chevrolet, and GMC are icons when it comes to this many rows of seating, but the market's expanded to include so many more versatile options outlined below. They might not have quite the same level of towing capacity as such full-size fare, but offer more cubic feet, fuel economy, and capability where it counts.

Acura MDX

CarGurus Rating: 7.8/10

Acura added an MDX Type S to the range for the 2024 model year, and quickly followed up with further welcome additions for 2025: Namely, its new, more user-friendly infotainment system. Acura has finally ditched the old touchpad—this not only frees up space in the center console, but also makes way for a responsive 12.3-inch touchscreen and helpful digital voice assistant.

Other upgrades for 2025 include added sound insulation, a subtly refreshed exterior, and improved functionality in several of the MDX's standard advanced driver-assistance systems.

The MDX Type S impresses, with its twin-turbo V6 putting down a whopping 355 horsepower, but the regular model also offers enjoyable driving dynamics. The standard 3.5-liter V6 engine makes 290 hp and 267 pound-feet of torque. A 10-speed automatic transmission and front-wheel drive (FWD) are standard, but Acura also offers all-wheel drive (AWD).

The MDX's cabin looks and feels premium, and higher trims bring opulent materials. The rear seats are spacious, but the third row should be reserved for children. There are plenty of standard features, including tri-zone climate control, leather seating surfaces, and more.

Honda Pilot

CarGurus Rating: 6.5/10

The Honda Pilot, along with its long-time rival, the Toyota Highlander, is a mainstay in the three-row SUV segment. Like the Highlander, the Pilot has made its way through a few design iterations over the years, culminating (for now) in a full redesign just last year. New since the 2023 model year, its rugged new looks accompany new tech and comfort features that keep it among the best SUVs on sale.

When it comes to seat configuration, most variants of the Honda Pilot come with eight seats, but some get captain's chairs for second-row seats that cut capacity to seven. Even if you do opt for bench seats in that middle row, third-row access remains easy thanks to the second row's stowable center seat, which creates a convenient pass-through.

The Pilot's connectivity was updated in recent years with a 7-inch touchscreen and 7-inch digital gauge display. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto come standard, along with Bluetooth and multiple USB inputs. The top Elite model steps up to a 9-inch touchscreen and a 10.2-inch gauge cluster.

Jeep Grand Cherokee L

CarGurus Rating: 8.2/10

The Grand Cherokee L joined Jeep's lineup just a couple of years ago as the first three-row Grand Cherokee in history. Jeep offers the vehicle in a whopping six trims that range in price from around $42,000 to more than $72,000 before options. Buyers looking for more luxury can step up to the Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer, which bring Land Rover Range Rover-level interior quality at a surprisingly stout MSRP.

Though it's slightly larger than the standard Grand Cherokee, thanks to the longer wheelbase, the L still gets the same two powertrain choices. That means a V6 engine with 293 hp or a V8 engine with 357 hp. Both are paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission and rear- or four-wheel drive (RWD or 4WD).

Though cloth upholstery is standard on the Grand Cherokee L, higher trims come decked out with quilted leather and even massaging seats for the front passengers. Beyond adding a third- row seat, the L brings good legroom to second-row passengers. When it comes to connectivity, the SUV is well-equipped out of the box, offering an 8.4-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. It also has a load of advanced safety features which include adaptive cruise control, active lane assist, and more.

Newcastle ship rarely-seen man to Juventus, making quick £20m profit in process

Newcastle have made a quick £20million profit, with multiple sources confirming that Juventus have agreed to sign defender Lloyd Kelly after just months at St James’ Park.

Kelly was signed by the Magpies in the summer on a free transfer from Bournemouth. However, he has struggled to break into the main side, with Dan Burn and Fabian Schar playing the majority of the minutes at centre-back.

Kelly has played just 301 minutes in the Premier League, starting just four games, mostly towards the beginning of the season. Eddie Howe is clearly able to make do without him, so has decided to sell.

According to David Ornstein, Juventus have agreed to sign Kelly on loan until the end of the season, when they will then sign him permanently for £20million, owing to an obligation.

Fellow insider Fabrizio Romano has reiterated that terms have been agreed, and a medical will soon take place.

That Kelly will be signed by Juve for £20million means Newcastle have made a full £20million profit from their original transfer, given they landed the centre-back for nothing.

Given they have struggled to finance moves for players due to FFP and PSR rules, landing a large profit on a player who was hardly getting any action is a good move from the Magpies.

With Miguel Almiron also moving on this window, it seems there is space at Howe’s side for a new player to join the club.

Newcastle are reportedly attempting to make a late dash for Brentford’s Bryan Mbeumo, and given there are some big clubs after him, it would be a top transfer to get done in January.

Jordan Henderson 'agrees deal to join Ligue 1 giants from Ajax

Jordan Henderson has reportedly agreed a deal to join leave Ajax to join a Champions League club.

Henderson has made 31 appearances in all competitions for the Eredivisie side this season, after being named captain by club boss Francesco Farioli this summer.

After arriving in January 2024 with the club in the midst of one of the worst seasons in their history, Henderson has been a key component in Ajax's rebuilding under Farioli this season.

However, according to a report from Fabrizio Romano, the England international's spell in the Netherlands could soon be coming to an end.

According to the report, a move that would see Henderson join Ligue 1 side Monaco on a permanent deal is close to being agreed between the two clubs.

Henderson is said to be joining on a contract that will run until the end of next season.

However, a report from Dutch publication De Telegraaf claimed that Ajax have informed Monaco that a move will not go ahead this month with Henderson viewed as vital in the club's bid to secure Champions League football.

After spending 12 glittering years at Anfield, Henderson departed the Merseyside club in the summer of 2023 in an ill-fated move to Al-Ettifaq of the burgeoning Saudi Pro League.

His time in the gulf state would ultimately prove to be short-lived, and Henderson made just 19 appearances before his lucrative contract was cancelled by mutual consent.

The move also proved to be disastrous for Henderson's international career.

After featuring regularly for England during the 2022 World Cup and in the final months of his time at Liverpool, Henderson has made just four appearances since departing the Premier League.

The 34-year-old's last international cap came during a Euro 2024 qualifier against Malta in November of 2023.

Monaco currently sit third in Ligue 1, 13 points behind runaway leaders PSG.

After losing to Inter Milan on Wednesday, the club narrowly missed out on knockout phase seeded playoffs in the revamped Champions League league phase, finishing 17th.

Should the deal be completed Henderson would become Monaco boss Adi Hutter's second January signing, after former Arsenal youngster Mika Biereth.

Darwin Nunez pulled out of Liverpool squad for PSV Champions League

 WHAT HAPPENED?

The striker has been linked with a move to Saudi Pro League side Al-Nassr this month, with just five days remaining of the January transfer window. However, it has been revealed that he he is missing out in Eindhoven due to illness, rather than an imminent move away from Anfield.

THE BIGGER PICTURE

Nunez's Liverpool future has been cast into doubt, with manager Arne Slot preferring to use Luis Diaz as his central striker and Cody Gakpo off the left in recent weeks. The forward's illness comes at an unfortunate time, with the game at PSV likely to have provided him with a chance to impress. Mohamed Salah and Diaz have been left at home, while youngster Jayden Danns started up front.

DID YOU KNOW?

It does not appear that Nunez is Al-Nassr's only target, with Jhon Duran of Aston Villa set for a medical in London ahead of a move to the club this week, The Athletic report. That would see Duran teamed up with Cristiano Ronaldo and Sadio Mane in their attack.

WHAT NEXT FOR LIVERPOOL AND NUNEZ?

Nunez should still receive plenty of playing time between now and the end of the season as Liverpool compete on four fronts for silverware. The Uruguayan has scored six goals this season and still has plenty to offer Slot.
